William Neal Wigginton passed from this pre-life to the Life to Come on September 13, 2022 after 88 trips around the sun. Bill, affectionately known as "Papa" to his grandchildren, was born March 16, 1934 at the Louisville Norton Hospital and was married to Carla Mae Saunders for 53 years until her death in 2012.
There were a number of things that he invested in throughout his life. He loved the Kentucky Wildcats and even had a photo of Coach Cal beside his chair, sort of like a basketball pope who watched over him to make sure he never rooted for the University of Louisville (he didn't!). He was a graduate of Atherton High School and then Georgetown College where he majored in psychology and sociology. After college, he enlisted for four years in the U.S. Navy, thoroughly enjoying posts in: Bambridge, Maryland; Norman, Oklahoma; Monterey, California; and Kodiak Island, Alaska. An avid storyteller like his father before him, he loved telling adventure stories centering around his time in Alaska! His greatest gift to his sons was both the quantity and quality of time that he spent with them in the growing up years. We were both impressed that the foundation of parenting was never rules, but always relationships!
After his discharge in 1959, he worked in the real estate business with Louie Long, at the U.S. Fidelity & Guaranty, Louisville Mortgage Service and then in insurance for many years as Vice President and President of the Louisville Insurance Service Company. In his last years before retiring at age 62, he worked part-time for the Ron Crimm Insurance agency.
Throughout his life, Bill was a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, St. Matthews Baptist Church, and in his older years was a faithful weekly participant in the television ministry of Walnut Street Baptist Church.
Bill was the son of John Stoner and Julia Shouse Wigginton and the brother of John Stoner Wigginton Jr., all of whom predeceased him.
Bill leaves behind two sons, Scott Wigginton (Elizabeth); and Steve Wigginton (Kim). Six grandchildren all remember special times with him. They include Teal Teysen (Eric), Tori Wigginton, Tress Wigginton, and Auburn Rathbone (Caleb), Hope Wigginton, and Caleb Wigginton. He was delighted to meet his first great grandchild, Raleigh Ruth Rathbone, this past year. In his later years, he loved coffee time with Kim and special moments with grandkids and his favorite grand-dog, Sport!
Memorial gifts may be made to the Louisville Fellowship of Christian Athletes (502-245-1514) or to the Campbellsville University School of Theology Student Experience in Israel (270-789-5029).
There will be no visitation or funeral service, preferring to talk with friends and family individually. Instead, the family will have a celebration of life around Thanksgiving.
