Ramp, Wayne S., Ed.D.
89, died after a brief illness on March 18, 2011 at Floyd Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born June 10, 1921 in Williamsfield, Illinois to the late Fred and Ethel Ramp, Wayne attended Illinois Wesleyan University on an athletic scholarship, and then received his B.S., M.A., and Ed.D. from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. He worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company as an apprentice, joining the U.S. Navy in 1944. He was a vocational education teacher in Streator, Illinois; in 1956 he taught in Baghdad, Iraq to establish vocational education for that nation. In 1957 he accepted a position at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, where he served for 25 years in many capacities, including Department Chairman. He won numerous awards including 1979 Vocational Educator of the Year and the 1982 Illinois Board of Education Meritorious Service Award. Upon his retirement, his former students established an endowed scholarship in his honor at Southern Illinois University.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Jean; his children, Stephen W. Ramp (Ellen), David L. Ramp (Ann Scott), and Susan K. Ridout (Kyle); one sister, Lorrain Mosher (Kenny); five grandchildren, Alison Buehler (Mike), Charles Ramp, Trevor Ramp, Patrick Ridout, and Emily Ridout; and three great grandchildren, Max, Ben, and Cecilia Buehler; as well as nephews and nieces.
Wayne loved raising Shorthorn cattle, farming and gardening, world travel, music and theater, and his family. As an educator he guided and mentored numerous masters and doctoral students. He will be greatly missed.
Wayne's visitation will be held on Thursday, March 31 at St. Marks United Church of Christ, 222 East Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Marks on April 1 at 11:00 a.m., following visitation starting at 10:00.
