Walter Joseph "Joe" Proctor, Jr., 87, New Albany, Indiana, passed away on February 10, 2023, surrounded by his family.
He was born August 3, 1935, in New Albany, Indiana, to Walter Joseph Proctor and Dorothy Catherine (Sluder) Proctor. Joe was an employee of American Air Filter for 38 years and Thermal Equipment Sales for 16 years. He was first in his class at Officer Candidate School and proudly served our country for 27 years with the Indiana National Guard, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He was a 63-year member at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Albany, where he served on the pastoral council for three different terms, in addition to the athletic and evangelization committees. He was a lector and eucharistic minister for forty years. He facilitated Bible study groups for 25 years; was a leader with the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults; served on the Faith Formation Commission, Parish Council, and Men's Club; taught religious education; and served as a leader on Parish Renewal and Lenten retreats. His Christian service ministries included helping at soup kitchens and visiting homebound and sick parishioners. He was an active member of the Mount Saint Francis Cursillo community since 1980.
Joe volunteered many hours of service to the New Albany Deanery Youth Ministry by serving as a retreat director at every high school level. For his dedication to young people, he received the St. John Bosco Award, the highest award presented in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis by the New Albany Deanery.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Gerry Lyn Mapes Proctor, in 2017; and is survived by his daughter, Julie Cundiff (Ben); his son, Jody Proctor; two grandchildren, Elisabeth "Lilly" and Hart Sanders; and his beloved golden retriever, Honey. His life was centered on his family and faith.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with a prayer vigil at 7:00 p.m., and visitation will continue from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday. His funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church (1752 Scheller Lane, New Albany) with burial and military honors to follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in New Albany.
