DOERTING, JR., WALTER J., 92, died peacefully Thursday, December 12, 2013. Was going for 100, but just wore out! He was born in Louisville, KY at the Old St. Mary's Hospital on 12th Street in 1921.
Walter enlisted in the Army shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a Tech Sergeant in the 100th Airborne Division. He served in WWII in the USA, North Africa, India, Burma, China, and Indo China. He was decorated twice for Exemplary Service by the United States and China as a Communications Chief, and also earned three Gold Battle Stars during the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, and The Bronze Star. Among his other communications skills, Walter spoke fluent Mandarin Chinese Dialect.
Walter retired from South Central Bell Telephone Company after 30 years, making great contributions through his extraordinary work ethics and commitment. He also spent several years in sales with the Louisville Motor Exchange. Walter was a Kentucky Colonel, a former member of the VFW Hobart Beach Post #1693, a charter member of the National Thunderbird Owners Club and The Antique Auto Club, and The Telco Pioneers. He was also a "Friend" of the Bardstown Historical Museum, as well as the Oscar Getz Whiskey Museum, loaning them both many items from his collections. Walter also owned the Hartmann Cooperage Museum, located in Clermont, KY at the Jim Beam Distillery Visitor's Center for 25 years. He and his wife, Betty, took great pleasure in working and visiting with their friends and visitors at the Museums and at Jim Beam.
Walter was married for 50 years to his loving wife Betty Margaret Rowe, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother, Stanley, daughters Cheryl Murphy, Peggy Skaggs (Marvin), and Susie Tommie (Sam), three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one niece, and two nephews.
Per his request, there will be no visitation. Private family service will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery, where he will be buried beside his beloved wife.
Walter will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on through his family and friends.
