Von F. Powell, age 73 of Louisville, went to his heavenly father on March 25, 2014. He was a loving husband, father and considered a gentle giant who was loved by most who knew him. He was born in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Thelma and Gerald Powell on May 22, 1940. He was an undergraduate at UofL, and received his Masters Degree at UofK. He started his education career as a 5th grade teacher at Gutermuth to go on to become an elementary school principal at Wilkerson for many years and a few years at Blake and Okolona. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Dads of Foreign Service Veterans and the Moose. He was an excellent accordion, keyboard and organ player. He attended the First Saint Cloud United Methodist Church in Florida where he loved to winter. He was preceded in death by his best friend and brother-in-law, Charles Hardin.
Von is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Betty; his son, Joe Powell; his daughter, Melissa Powell; brother, Robert Maloney (Janet); sister-in-law, Pat Hardin; and his loving companions, his dogs Jingles, Sabrena and Charlie.
Visitation will be from 1-6pm Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive. A funeral ceremony will be Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at First Saint Cloud United Methodist Church in Saint Cloud, Florida, with burial in Mount Peace Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a no-kill dog shelter of your choice or First United Methodist Church of St. Cloud, Florida.
