Virgil Martin Mills, age 88 of Finchville, Kentucky passed away Monday, March 31, 2025. Virgil was born on October 29, 1936 to the late John and China Hatcher Mills near Beckly, West Virginia. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was a self-taught tinker, handyman and teacher. Virgil had a strong work ethic and was always handy with and happiest with projects. He loved country music and bluegrass, his cabin in the woods, his animals and most of all he loved his family. He was a gentle and kind soul that everyone who met him loved. Virgil was a high achiever and a perfectionist. He was a survivor of pancreatic cancer of over 18 years.
Virgil was a proud member of the United States Army where he excelled at many things. He received his training in the Armed Forces starting at age 17. He taught NATO troops and attended guided missile school, was a member of the launch team where he also became a training instructor in the ordnance guided missile school (Army Missile and Munition Center and School). He achieved the rank of Sargeant. After the military, he worked long-term as an Airway Transportation Systems Specialist at the Atlanta, Georgia and Lexington, Kentucky airports.
Virgil was a man of faith and was a former deacon in the Lutheran church. He attended the University of Alabama and was an avid University of Kentucky fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Mills, Luther Mills and Vonley Mills; his sister, Venora Riggs.
Virgil is survived by his loving wife of over 49 years, Coleen Mills; son, Kevin Mills (Sandra); grandchildren, Robert Desmond (Amber), Chase Desmond Mills, Phillip Mills (Molly), Samuel Mills and Chelsea Desmond; great-grandchildren, Phoebe and Penelope; his beloved companion, Marlee; and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 10am to 12pm on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40243. A celebration of Virgil's life will follow at 12pm at the funeral home. Committal service for burial will be at 2:30pm at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, Kentucky.
