Virgil Gray, Jr.

September 10, 1952 — June 5, 2021

Virgil Montgomery "Monty" Gray, Jr., age 68, passed away suddenly at his home in Louisville, KY, on Saturday, June 5, 2021. Monty is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy Pace Gray, a son, Scott Montgomery Gray (Brandy Gray), of Austin, TX, a daughter, Andrea Nicole Wcisel (Michael Wcisel), of Fisherville, KY. Monty was a proud Papa to grandsons Hunter Montgomery Gray and Liam Kalan Gray and granddaughters Harper Irene Wcisel and Henley Rose Wcisel.

Monty was born on September 10, 1952, in Lebanon, KY. He was the son of Virgil M. "Buddy" Gray, Sr., and Alberta Mae "Beanie" Hourigan Gray who were also born in Marion County, KY. Both preceded him in death.

He was a graduate of the 1970 class of Lebanon High School in Lebanon, KY which was the last graduating class. He still boasted that he played a trumpet and marched in the high school band. He loved the game of golf and was on the golf team in high school.

Monty earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, KY in 1974. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He was employed by the Kentucky Revenue Department in Louisville, KY., and took early retirement in 2006 after 31 years of service. However, his career did not end there as he established Titleist Ventures, Inc., a bookkeeping and tax service which continued until the time of his death.

For many years, he was an active member of Northeast Christian Church, Louisville, KY and was a current member of Southeast Christian Church of Crestwood, KY. Monty volunteered his time for many years to Operation Christmas Child / Samaritan's Purse to support his wife, Nancy, who is the Area Coordinator for the Louisville Area.

Monty treasured the many friends he made through family, school, college, work, and church. A lot of them were life-long forever friends. He could be boisterous and sarcastic and argue for the fun of it, but he would do anything to help family and friends. He was loyal, and trustworthy with a heart of gold. Family meant everything.

Additional survivors are a brother Michael Gray (Kandice Engle-Gray), of Lebanon, KY. He has two surviving sisters, Joy Denise Gray and Donna Marie Gray Dornfeld, both of Louisville, KY. His only surviving aunt is Joyce Fricke Gray of Jackson, MS.
Other survivors are niece Missy Hourigan, DMD (Mike Mackin), and nephew Rob Hourigan (Liz Hourigan), and two grand nephews. Monty had a sister-in-law Paula Pace Neyman (James Neyman), of Keller, TX and three nephews, Matt Pace (San Diego, CA), Marc Pace (Scottsdale, AZ) and Jamie McGlasson (Durango, CO). Monty is preceded in death by his brother-in-law Edward Shelton Pace.

The visitation will be held on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at Northeast Christian Church, 9900 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY 40241, between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. The memorial service will take place upon conclusion of visitation, at 4:00 pm.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any remembrances or expressions of sympathy be made as donations to KODA (Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates).

Monty's ashes will be interred in the Ryder Cemetery in Lebanon, KY at a later date.
