Terry Ray Akers, 76, of Sellersburg, Indiana, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023. Terry was a sweet, genuine man that, by nature, helped others. He had a great sense of humor and loved making others laugh. Terry was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, where he made lifelong friends and cherished memories while serving his country honorably. He was a longtime member of American Legion Post #204, as well as Graceland Baptist Church.
He was born on May 25, 1946, in Borden, Indiana, to Marvin and Pauline (Martin) Akers. He is preceded in death by his father, Marvin Ray Akers; mother, Pauline Claire (Polly) Akers; and brother, Jody Akers.
Terry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Frances Akers; daughter, Kristy Taylor and her husband, Eric; grandson, Isaac Taylor; granddaughter, Lucy Taylor; brothers, Kevin Akers and his wife, Carla, Jeffrey Akers and his wife, Terri, Kelley Akers and his girlfriend, Hettie Shetley, and Bradley Akers and his wife, Carol; several cherished nieces and nephews; and many other extended family and friends.
As a child, Terry met Fran while playing in the creek that separated their parents' properties in their hometown. They went on to become high school sweethearts and were by each other's side until his last day. Terry enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved teaching his grandchildren, Isaac and Lucy, all about nature, including teaching them how to fish. He instilled a love and appreciation of the simple things in life, not only in his daughter, but also in his grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with burial to follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Borden, Indiana.
