On January 3, 2023, we lost a most unique and beautiful soul. Sylvia Giovanna Valkovich Shauck passed away in Durham, NC, following a stroke she suffered while on a holiday trip. After fleeing her native, war-torn Europe at age 24 to make a new life in the US, Sylvia married and had 2 daughters. She eventually relocated to the Washington, DC area where she raised Erika and Sylvia. She was a talented commercial artist who felt very indebted to the US Air Force, her employer for 35 years. In retirement she wrote a fascinating memoir about the war years, helped raise her grandsons, traveled the world and surrounded herself with beauty in her homes and gardens.
Left to mourn her are daughters, Erika Wardlow (Rick) and Sylvia Burns (Steve); grandchildren, Caitlin Wardlow, Christopher Burns, Kerry Burns (Hannah) and Payton Wardlow; and great-grandson, Jake Burns, all of whom she loved dearly.
Visitation will be 3 to 6pm on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40243. Mass of Celebration will be held at 11am on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church 212 Mt. Mercy Drive Pewee Valley, Kentucky 40056, with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. All are welcome to celebrate Sylvia's long and full life.
