Susan Schmied

Susan Schmied, 77, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2024. 

She was born on May 19, 1947 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Frank and Mary Katherine (Findley) App. She is also preceded in death by her step-son, Andrew Schmied and his daughter, Bailey Schmied. 

John's last love letter to Susan:

Dear Sus our love story began many years ago in 1962. I knew when I saw you that it was love at first site. We had so many good times in that short span of five years. However, fate stepped in and changed our life course at that time. We went our separate ways in 1967. We both moved forward with marriage and family. Little did we know that the stars would align and we would be reunited again in 1994. We both knew then that we were soul mates. We married on January 2, 1998 and have never looked back.

While we never had children together, we had our fur babies who we love and treat like our children. We created a world where you made me a better person.

Sus, you saved me from myself. You rescued me, loved me and always kept me on my toes. We created so many memories that I will cherish until I see you again, to make more.

You are my rock, my girl and the love of my life. 

I do not know what today, tomorrow or next week holds for me. All I know is the pain of you not physically being here with me. I know you are in a much better place. You are able to do things you could not do here. Now, you will always be safe, with no pain and no illness. I am thankful that you are not suffering anymore and now I have taken on the physical suffering that you endured here, in the form of a broken heart.

While my heart aches, I have FAITH that I will see you again. I ask just one thing Sus… please, when it is my time to reunite with you, be waiting for me at that beautiful place, with your arms stretched as far as the ocean is wide and welcome me home.

Until then I will look for you in the faces of Soph and Sam, the flowers, the wind, the sun and the water.

I love you Sus and you will always be “My Girl”!!

Susan is survived by her loving husband and high school sweetheart, John Carl Schmied, children, Melissa Potts (Will Buschmann), Andrew Potts (Kim), step-daughter, Kimberly Carter (Dean Walsh), step-son, Michael Schmied (Julie), bonus daughter, Kim Cash (Mike), grandchildren, Lauryn Wisenberger, Patrick Wisenberger, Reagan Buschmann, Emma Potts, Dustin Zehnder, Chad Zehnder, Kristen Rogers, Trenton Hixenbaugh, Henry Schmied, Charlotte Schmied, and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Walter App (Donna Tilson), and her nephews, Alex (Megan) and Steven (Sydney) App. She also is survived by her fur babies, Sam and Sophie. 

A celebration of Susan's life will be held at Christ United Methodist Church (4614 Brownsboro Rd, St Matthews, KY 40207) on Saturday, August 10, 2024 from 10:00 am until the time of the service at 1:00 pm with a open house to follow at her home. 

The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions in Susan’s memory be made to the Kentucky Humane Society or any local rescue organization.
