Sue Sears Newkirk quietly left this world at her home on November 16, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. Sue was born on July 4th, 1939 in Azof, Kentucky to Thelma Wright Sears Brown and Edward Seldon Sears. After graduating from Ferguson High School at age 16, she attended Campbellsville College and Eastern Kentucky University where she studied library science. Sue had a lifelong love of learning and literature, which she passed on to others during her years at the Pulaski County Public Library where she drove the bookmobile and headed up children's story hour. Sue had a great love of people, which served her well in her second career as a Realtor/Broker. She will be remembered fondly by the many people she sold real estate to in Jefferson County. Sue was gifted with numerous talents and was an outstanding cook, entertainer, decorator, and storyteller. However, it was her roles as a wife, mother, and grandmother that brought her the most joy in life, and she will be tremendously missed by the many who were family to her.
In addition to her parents, Sue is preceded in death by a brother, Harold E. Sears. She is survived by her devoted husband Darwin; her four children Clarissa (Phil) Ragland, Jami DuVall, Eric (Amy) Newkirk, and Pearl "Cissy" Childress, four grandchildren Brandon (Shonna) Conley, Susan (Chris) Cook, Alex Ragland and Elise Newkirk, and four great-grandchildren Emily Conley, Sarah Conley, Taylor Moore, and Maddy Moore. She is also survived by four sisters, Beverly (Clifford) Randall, Marcella (John) Hill, Carol Richey, and Sherri (Jack) Ritchie, two brothers, Edward (Rebecca) Sears and John (Georgia) Sears, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Newcomer East Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 18th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, November 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Center for Women and Families in Louisville KY.
