Sterley Buckner Jr. (aka "Junebug", "Bucky", "Buck") was born January 3, 1933 to Sterley Sr. and Willie Roberta Smith Buckner in Louisville Kentucky. He was the second of 11 children. He professed his hope in Jesus Christ at an early age. He attended Zion Baptist Church but was baptized at Hill Street Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late reverend H.C. Mitchell. He answered God's call to eternal rest on November 30, 2012.
He attended Louisville city schools graduating from Central High School in 1950. he completed Tucker's Barber and Beauty College and has worked as a licensed Barber and Beautician. He served in The United States Army and was honorably discharged. He retired from the US Postal Service after 31+ of government service.
An avid servant of Christ, he has sung gospel music with various groups, quartets as a soloist throughout the Louisville area. He was a member of the 1st Virginia Avenue Missionary Baptist Church, where he has served as Adult Sunday School Teacher, Senior Choir Member, Sunday School Treasurer, Assistant Church Treasurer, and Deacon. He has also provided spiritual direction and mentoring for many persons both in and beyond his local church.
In 1974, he united in marriage to the late Anna M. Howard Buckner. he was also preceded in death by his parents, a son Dwayne(Crissy) Buckner, a daughter Emma J. Gaither, three brothers, two sisters, and two grandchildren.
He leaves to cherish his memory; 2 sons, Richard, Faulkner, and Keith L Buckner; 1 daughter, Theresa Burrell Buckner, one brother, David A. Bucker (Joyce); three sisters; Mary L. Buckner of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; Pearl Gillespie-Gray (Bob) of Harned, Kentucky; Barbara B. King; and a host of great-great grand children, great-grandchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
For everyone he loves and all who mourn his passing, he leaves the words of his favorite two verses of scripture:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding,in all ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6) and "... I have learned, in whatsoever state I am; therewith to be content." (Philippians 4:11)
Visitation will be Wednesday Dec 5, 2012 at First Virginia Missionary Baptist Church, 3601 Virginia Ave, Louisville,Ky from 3PM to 8PM.
Service will be Thursday Dec 6, 2012 at 11AM at the church
