Sonja Tyson, a beloved matriarch and dedicated worker, passed away October 3, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born on January 7, 1951, she spent her 73 years impacting the lives of those around her through love, kindness, and unwavering strength.

Sonja was known for her hard work and dedication during 12 years at Tarc Transportation, where she touched many lives with her compassion. Throughout career, she embodied the spirit of service, reflecting her deep commitment to helping others. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sonja was cherished most as a caring mother, grandmother, sister, and auntie. She had a feisty personality that endeared her to all who knew her, but it was her love for her family that truly defined her. 

She is survived by her daughters, Angela Tyson (Don) and Shannon Tyson, and her son, Shawn Tyson (Maudie). Sonja also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, and two loving sisters, Mary Webb and Jo Ann Smith, along with a multitude of siblings who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

Sonja's family takes solace in the joyous memories they created together. She was especially fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her love for them was boundless. In her Smoketown days, she found joy in singing and dancing with a group called the JazzNetts. Music defined much of her life, with Marvin Gaye being her favorite artist, encapsulating her vibrant spirit. She was also a dedicated U of L Fan. 

She was predeceased by her son, Ronald Devon Tyson, her grandson, Imir Tyson, her mother, Apolonia Shipp, her father, Arnold Shipp, her biological father, Randolph Ellis, and her sister, Shirley Brownlow. Their memories remain an integral part of Sonja’s story.

Friends and family are invited to honor Sonja's memory during the visitation on October 11, 2024, from 2 PM to 4 PM, followed by a funeral service at 4 PM. Both events will be held at the Newcomer Funeral Home, East Louisville, located at 235 Juneau Dr, Louisville, KY 40243.

Sonja Tyson's legacy will endure through the countless lives she impacted, her family’s shared memories, and the love she radiated. She will be missed dearly but remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
