The brightest light in the room became the brightest star in the sky as Sheri Holt Denton, 53, passed away on August 19th in Cincinnati while establishing residency for a liver transplant following a long journey with liver disease.
Although Sheri's time earthside was cut short, she accomplished much while she was among us and her life's philosophy embraced the things that comprise a vibrant and meaningful life. Among these, were friendship, love and music.
Sheri loved with her whole heart, she laughed a lot, smiled often, and celebrated the little things in life.
Possessing a gift for overlooking flaws, she had a special way of giving those she knew comfort and assurance that we are all just imperfect humans and children of God trying to enjoy the ride and make our way home.
After attending Georgetown College and the College of Charleston with undergraduate studies in Sociology Sheri went on to acquire a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Louisville's Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Through these experiences she discovered a new avenue of sharing her joy for life and helping others with their own life stories and relationships.
Sheri loved exploring new places, loved traveling, and moved several times throughout the years making lifelong friends from all walks of life, coast to coast, dotted across the country. From Charleston to San Francisco Sheri laughed, loved, and shared millions of smiles leaving more than a lifetime's worth of memorable tales in her wake.
Sheri also possessed a deep love of music. If you knew her well, you can probably name at least one of her favorite songs or perhaps she even assigned one to you as "your song." Music is how Sheri cataloged her life, special people and cherished memories. It's the one thing that brought her happiness when occasionally all else failed. Just two short months ago she was with her dear friend of over 40 years, Lynette, dancing and singing in the 10th row at a Beach Boys concert in Concord, CA. She was always a California-girl-at-heart. One of Sheri's most loved songs, though, was "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers. If you read the lyrics it's clear why she loved this song as it summed up who she was and what it was like to know her.
While Sheri was ultimately unable to overcome end stage liver disease, she was hopeful until the very end, organizing a fundraiser on her own behalf 8 weeks ago called "I Want to Live" which assisted her in relocating to Cincinnati to participate in the live donor program. Heartfelt thanks to all who chipped in as her dream almost came true. She was making future plans for her life post-operation but sadly, the clock was against her and she became too ill once she arrived.
She never quit though. Sheri laughed, loved and danced until the very end.
Sheri passed peacefully in her sleep at Cincinnati Hospital with her mother and father present; both loving and supporting her as she left behind the body that had caused her so much pain, spread her wings, and took flight on her next adventure.
Sheri is survived by her parents, Scott and Sherrill Holt; two sons, who she was so proud of, Matthew Holt and Hayden Denton; younger sister, (sista my sista) Cari Holt Adkins; nephews, Andrew and Keaton Dugger; Mother-in-Law Judy Denton; as well as many dearly loved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She is also survived by her dear friend, Bill Hinton; and a special friend and caretaker, Chris Corby.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents Virgil and Carolyn Holt of Georgetown, KY and Bill and Dotty Smart of Versailles, KY.
Visitation will take place at Chapel in the Woods 1407 Moser Rd, Louisville, KY 40299 on September 2nd, 2022 from 12-2pm. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 2pm.
Memorials may be made (on behalf of her sons Hayden and Matthew) to the family. Proceeds go directly to their health insurance, college/educational expenses, as well as other anticipated expenses as they adjust to their lives moving forward.
