Samuel Vance Steele, born on March 10, 1937, in Ironton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024, at the serene Avow hospice facility in Naples, Florida, at the age of 87. He is survived by his daughter, Kelli Steele Silliman (James), and his grandsons, James B. Silliman (Shannon), Zachary J. Silliman, Samuel K. Silliman (Samantha), and Samuel V. Steele III. Samuel was also blessed with four great-granddaughters: Charlotte June Silliman, Lily Mae Silliman, Magnolia Lee Silliman, and Daisy James Silliman.
Samuel was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Anderson Steele, his son, Samuel V. Steele Jr., his parents, Samuel K. Steele and Maria V. Steele, and his sister, Sandra Steele Noe.
Samuel attended Manual High School and continued his education at the University of Louisville for both his undergraduate and law degrees. He met Gloria Anderson on a double date (she was not his date) and they married a year later. Together, they raised two children and numerous pets, beginning a 52-year journey in Saint Matthews, an ideal community for family life. Sam and Gloria cherished the friendships they formed over the years.
During his professional career, Samuel achieved many accomplishments, most notably his years at Old Fitzgerald Distillery. He had a deep passion for the spirits industry and was known for his extensive knowledge of Kentucky bourbon. In fact, just a few nights before his passing, he shared a detailed history of the spirits industry in Louisville and the art of making real Kentucky bourbon.
Samuel loved traveling, fine dining, playing Rummikub, and cheering for his Louisville Cardinals sports teams.
In retirement, he moved to Naples, Florida, where he met the fabulous Lorraine Legg. He adored her zest for life and her family, finding joy and companionship in his later years. Golfing and traveling with their Cypress Woods crew were some of his favorite times. Samuel and Lorraine spent his final 12 years together in wonderful fashion, even managing a trip to the Kentucky Derby.
Samuel Steele will be laid to rest at Cave Hill Cemetery in the presence of family. In lieu of flowers we ask that you make a donation to:
