Sammie Louis Smith, born April 11, 1955, to the late Charlie Jr. and Merlissie Smith (Pegues), in Oxford, Mississippi departed this life on August 17, 2023, in his home.
Sammie, along with his siblings, moved to Racine, Wisconsin in the 1950's where he resided until he traveled to San Diego, California at eighteen years old to enlist in the Navy; serving two and a half years. He spent the next several years residing in San Diego until relocating to Louisville, Kentucky in 2002.
Sammie enjoyed racing and had several race cars that he loved to race at the track and often competed in drag races. Sammie spent a lot of time visiting family in California. If he wasn't on the road, he was usually working on projects, in which most of those he did with his brother, Billy. He married his significant other of eleven years, Glenda Jackson, June 5, 2023.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Jr. and Merlissie Smith; son, Terrance Buckley; brothers, Edward "Billy Boy" Smith and Daryl "Pudgy" Smith; aunts, Ernestine Price, Bernice Flora, Patricia Pegues and Dorothy Donaldson; uncles, John Flora, Joe Louis Smith and James Jennings; nieces and nephews, Lucretia, Jeffrey, Deshawn and Terrance and cousins, Dorothy, Eddie and Roger Mcglorn.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories with his wife, Glenda Smith of Louisville, Kentucky; siblings, Lula (Sonny) Owens of Louisville, Kentucky, Betty, Earl Joyce, Jeffrey and Norman of San Diego, California; aunts, Bobbie Goolsby of Oxford, Mississippi. Marzee Smith of Racine, Wisconsin, Lula Grace of Michigan and Mamie Jennings of Racine, Wisconsin; uncles, Thomas (Velma) Pegues, Ray Donaldson of Racine, Wisconsin, Willie Frank Goolsby of Oxford, Mississippi, Johnny Pegues of San Diego, California, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and special friend Vernon Armstrong.
Visitation will be Friday, September 1, 2023, at Spirit Anew Ministries, 1634 Rangeland Road, Louisville, KY 40219, from 11am-12pm with a celebration of Sammie's life beginning at 12pm.
A graveside service with honors will be at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery - Central, 2501 N. Dixie Blvd, Radcliff, KY, beginning at 2:30pm.
