Roy Lee Craven, 72, of Louisville, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on September 8th, 2023.
He was born on August 2nd, 1951 in Louisville, Kentucky to Billie Joyce and George C. Craven. After graduating HS in 1970, he was drafted into the Army and served two years. Following his return home, he became a Louisville Professional Firefighter; a career he kept for 32 years. At the time of his retirement in 2002, he held the position of Captain. Following his retirement from Louisville Fire, he worked as a State Fire Marshall for over a decade. As an active union member for many years, Roy gained the respect and friendship of many - from coworkers to politicians.
In 1966, Roy met his future wife, Janie, through a mutual friend. In 1969, they married and went on to have 2 beautiful girls, Stacie and Sarah. Roy and Janie celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in April and one of the last things he said to his wife was, "you always knew what I liked".
Roy has always been a die hard UofL fan and you could often catch him on TV at the games - after which he'd tell his family he was a movie star. Roy spent many years in the gym, as an avid heavy weight lifter. Two years in a row, he won Mr. Kentucky Muscle for his age group. On Feb 3rd, 2019, Roy joined in believers baptism, and was baptized at GracePointe Baptist Church, where he continued to faithfully attend and serve as a greeter until his health began to decline.
Roy is preceded in death by both of his parents, his grandparents and 3 brothers, George Mac, Raymond and Danny.
He is survived by his wife Janie, daughters Stacie and Sarah (Eric), his grandson, Killian, his sisters Ronda and Sandy, brother Billy, numerous nieces and nephews, and good friends.
Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel, (10304 Dixie Hwy).
