Yeoman Chief Petty Officer, Ronald Anthony Bates was born in Louisville, Ky on April 18, 1953. He left this earth to return home on April 28, 2013. Ronald selflessly served our country in the Navy from July 1970 to March 1993. He is affectionately known by his family as "Ronnie", "Uncle Ronnie", "Dad", " Papa" and last but certainly not least "Loving Husband".
Ronnie was a son to Connie and Kathleen Bates. He is survived by his wonderful wife, Judy Bates and his children Tony and Angel Bates; grandchildren, Landen, Raegan and Haleigh; his siblings, Larry, Janice, Suzy, Yolanda and Pam; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Chief Bates will be remembered as a wonderful man with a heart that anyone would envy. He served our country with great pride and love for its people. Ronnie made great sacrifices to ensure safety and happiness for everyone. There wasn't a single negative bone in his body. That man never met a stranger. He welcomed everyone he came across with open arms. If you never had the blessing of meeting this great man just know that he loved you anyway.
For those that did know him, I'm sure you would all agree that after your initial introduction you've felt as if you've known him for years. He touched many hearts and was a solid shoulder to cry on. He never judged he just listened and gave his take on the situation with his wisdom and life experience. Gentle and kind, his words weighed greatly on the hearts and ears they fell upon. I would not be out of line at all by saying he was a man among men. I can only hope that I will grow to be half the man my dad was.
So please, don't' cry out of sadness. Praise the gifts he bestowed on this world. Rejoice in knowing that the greater power, whoever that may be for you, gave us such a model of perfection. Strive to be better, take the time to tell everyone you love that you hold them dear in your heart. Be like Chief Bates and give without regret and love without limits and be true to yourself.
