Robert W. "Bob" Emerson, 86, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Floyd Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. Bob was an Army veteran of WWII 773 F.A.B. HQ and a life member of VFW Post 1693 Hobart Beach with 35+ years as the Service Officer. He was also a member of the K of C #1221 Cardinal Ritter, the Kentucky Colonels, and Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany where he served as a Eucharistic Minister for 12 years. Bob volunteered at the Veterans' Medical Center in Louisville for 28 years and the American Red Cross for 15 years.
Bob was born on January 23, 1925 to the late Garrette and Nina (Killion) Emerson, Sr.. He was also preceded in death by his brother, John P. Emerson.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley A. (Brodfuehrer) Emerson; children, Alice and Jim Deich of Ridgefield, New Jersey, William "Bill" and Peggy Emerson of Navilleton, Indiana, Nina and Donnie Hitner of Edwardsville, Indiana, Catherine and Elmer Knable of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, Margie Emerson and Dan Stilger of New Albany; siblings, Nina Butera of Orlando, FL, Garrette Emerson, Jr. of Louisville, KY, George Emerson of Utica, Indiana, Hazel Carter of Prospect, KY; grandchildren, William "Billy" Emerson, Joe Emerson, Michael Emerson, Holly Gohmann, Nik Hatfield, Catie Knable-Leslie, Isaac Knable, Britni Knable, Samantha Hitner, Clayton Hitner, Madison Emerson, Emilee Emerson; great-grandchildren, Garrett Emerson, Kassidy Emerson, Nikolette Hatfield, Porter Gohmann, Savanna Gohmann, Jackson Emerson, Nathaniel Emerson, Kennedy Emerson, Aubrey Hatfield, and Wyatt Emerson.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 PM on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and from 9 to 11 AM on Thursday. A Rosary service will take place Wednesday at 4 PM. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon Thursday, March 10, at Holy Family Catholic Church (129 W. Daisy Lane, New Albany, IN) with cremation to follow.
