Robert L. "Sugarbear" Vance, 72, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2023. Bear spent his final days surrounded by family and close friends.
He was born on June 28, 1950, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Charles and Emma (Wyatt) Vance. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Charles Vance, Jr.; sister, Patricia Poole; and granddaughter, Brittney Page Wells.
Bear is survived by his loving wife, Rosetta Vance; daughter, Leslie R. (Danny) Wells; stepdaughter, Sandra (Steve) Mayes-Angelini; granddaughters, Magnolia Mae Wells, Doris Jean Wells, Rachel Mayes, and Sarah Mayes; great-grandson, Carson Allen Wells; brother, Smith E. Vance; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was also looking forward to welcoming another great-grandson in September.
Bear was a fun-loving, caring guy, who enjoyed many things in life, including cooking, reading, and vacationing on the beach. He loved his friends like family and treasured the time he spent riding his Harley with his band of brothers and sisters. He had a soft spot for the greyhounds in his life, and he was actively involved in greyhound rescue through Greyhound Pets of America since 2000. Bear's family and friends were his greatest priorities. He could always be counted on to show up and help out. He enjoyed the time he spent cooking for his family and "evil plotting" with his granddaughters. He was quick to crack a joke and even quicker to comfort a hurting spirit. He was a big guy with a big personality, who left an impact on everyone he met. In life, Bear was much loved and, in death, he will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. In honor of his fun-loving personality, love of the beach, and enthusiasm for all things gaudy, the family requests that guests wear their favorite Hawaiian, tie-dyed, or loudly colored shirt.
The family requests that contributions in Robert's memory be made to the American Lung Association (10168 Linn Station Road, Louisville, KY 40223).
The family would also like to send a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Floyd Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care, especially to the ones in the PCU. The love and support they provided during his final days will never be forgotten.
