Robert "Bob" Neil Simmons, 90, passed away peacefully on September 30, surrounded by family. Bob was born February 26, 1932 in Fort Wayne, IN and grew up in Coldwater, MI.
Bob played football, baseball and basketball at Coldwater High School. His basketball team won the State Championship in 1949. After High School he attended Albion College and graduated from Western Michigan University. He then joined the Army and became a 1st Lieutenant for the 1st Calvary division during the Korean War, serving in a MASH unit in Japan. After his military service, Bob worked for the State of Michigan and raised his family in East Lansing, MI. He also was an Adjunct Professor at Michigan State University and was on the board of directors for Michigan National Bank. He retired in 1992 as the MI Deputy Director of the Office on Aging.
After retirement, Bob and Nancy moved to Albuquerque, NM where they lived for 30 years. Bob was an avid golfer, nicknamed "Fairway Bob" at his golf club of many years. A highlight for him was playing at the renowned Pebble Beach golf course. A lifelong Michigan State fan, he stayed loyal to his Spartans by never missing a chance to see a game and proudly wearing Green and White. Bob enjoyed meeting new people and entertained all with his humor. He will be most remembered for loving his family, his quick wit, kindness and helping those in need.
Bob is preceded in death by his father Chester Dean Simmons, his mother Roa Laurine (Bolley) Simmons, his sister Shirley Fuller and nephew Steve Fuller.
Bob is survived by his wife Nancy (Cummings) Simmons, "the love of his life" for 62 years; his much-loved three daughters, Kelly Carter (Rich), Wendy Dampier, Kristin Simmons; grandchildren, Aaron and Tyler (Sarah), Haleigh (Joe) and Samantha, Jess and Isaiah; great-grandchildren, Braxton and Harper; and nieces and nephews, Jeanne, Diana, John and Burt, as well as his loving and loyal dog, Fritzy, and many other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, and Receptions (235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40243) beginning at 12:00pm.
