Robert D. Blackwell, Sr., affectionately known as Bob, passed away on January 3, 2025, at the age of 77. He was born on June 20, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky, and dedicated his life to both his family and his passions.
Bob proudly served in the United States Navy, where he demonstrated a commitment to his country that would remain a significant part of his identity throughout his life. His enthusiasm for life was reflected not only in his military service but also in his love for sports; he played softball for an incredible 41 years, engaging both in friendly competition and the camaraderie that the sport offered. Outside of athletics, Bob had a profound appreciation for nature. He found joy in bird watching, fishing, hunting, and gardening.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary Blackwell, and their three children, Rob (Cheryl) Blackwell, Tonia (Krice) Cook, and Ryan (Gena) Blackwell Sr. He cherished his role as a grandfather to 11 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 10 great-grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication. He is also survived by his siblings, Sue Davis, Carl (Betty) Blackwell, and Lucy Richardson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Blackwell and Marcella Sparks Mudd, as well as his sister, Linda Raque. The impact that Bob had on those around him will long be remembered, and his spirit will endure through the countless memories shared by his family and friends.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His Funeral Service will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, at the funeral home. Bob will be laid to rest privately at Resthaven Memorial Park in Louisville.
