Rick Dale Miller, 76, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024. He graduated from Georgetown High School in 1965 and went on to attend Indiana State University, where he earned his undergraduate and master's degrees. Rick continued his professional education at Indiana University Southeast.
He taught Radio and Television at Floyd Central High School for 33 years, and was a broadcaster for WNAS - 88.1. While at Floyd Central, Rick coached Boys Tennis (44 years) and Girls Tennis (22 years). Upon his retirement in 2016, Rick had amassed 1,013 victories, more than any other coach in the history of Indiana High School Tennis, and had earned a distinguished spot in the Indiana High School Tennis Hall of Fame. For over 40 years, Rick organized summer youth tennis camps and was also instrumental in starting the doubles league at Mockingbird Valley.
Rick was an avid golfer and longtime member of Valley View Golf Course. The first 38 years of his life, Rick was a member of Tunnel Hill Christian Church, and for the past 38 years was a member of Edwardsville United Methodist Church. He also had been a salesperson at Schmitt Furniture for 34 years.
He was born on May 5, 1947 in New Albany, Indiana to Robert and Irene (Bell) Miller. Along with his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hayes Miller Jr.
Rick is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jennifer (Cantrell) Miller; children, Shannon Miller, Brandon Miller (Madeleine Stapp); sisters, Joy Noll, Brenda Miller; sister-in-law, Norietta Miller; and grandchildren, Catie Collard (Matthew) and Andrew Dorgay.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 11, 2024 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and after 9:00 a.m. on Monday. His funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home with burial at Edwardsville/Tunnel Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Rick Miller Memorial Fund. The entirety of these funds will be used rename and dedicate the Floyd Central Tennis Courts, in honor of Rick. If there are additional funds, they will be used in the form of a scholarship to send children to summer tennis camps that are unable to afford it. There will also be a petition to rename the Floyd Central Tennis Courts after Rick Miller at the visitation.
