Richard Allen Smithson

Richard Allen Smithson returned to his Heavenly Father on May 11, 2021.

He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on July 25, 1936, to the late Elmer and Beulah Smithson. He was a graduate of Dupont Manual High School and Western Kentucky University. Richard played baseball, football, and ran track at Manual High School, and played baseball and ran track at Western Kentucky University. He was an avid golfer who had 6 hole in ones. Richard retired from Jefferson County Schools in 1990 after teaching at Doss High School and Stuard Middle School. He was a teacher, coach and Assistant Principal at Bowling Green High School, and Principal of Lynch High School in Harlan County. He was elected to the 1958-59 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities." He also was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Professional Education Fraternity and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of Beechland Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. Richard is preceded in death by his nephew Stephen Hilbert and niece Cynthia Hilbert Britt.

He is survived by his sister, Helen Smithson Hilbert, his niece Deborah Hilbert VanMeter, his niece by marriage Nina Crocetti Hilbert, and great nieces and nephews, Kelly (Bryan)Vaughn, Chris (Whitney) VanMeter, Philip (Meg) Britt, Lauren (Cort) Redmon and Jackie Hilbert. He is also survived by his devoted friend, Betsy Long who brought Richard many years of love and companionship.

Any donations in his memory may be made to Hosparus. Their care and kindness was greatly appreciated by Richard's family and friends. Memorial donations may go to The Special Olympics of Kentucky and The Kentucky Humane Society.

A private funeral will be planned.
