Richard E. Schmidt

Richard E. Schmidt , 80, of New Albany, Indiana passed away on January 22, 2013 at Mercy-Providence Retirement Home. He retired from South Central Bell and was a United States Army veteran. Richard was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Cardinal Ritter #1221 and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Albany.

Richard was born on June 3, 1932 in New Albany to the late Herman S. and Mary A. (Schmelz) Schmidt. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann (Ashley) Schmidt; siblings, Herb Schmidt, Nettie Jones, and Monica Haskell.

He is survived by his children, Brian Schmidt (Ruth), Tommy Schmidt (Laura), Claudia Hernandez (Joe), Jackie Karem (Tony); siblings, Bill Schmidt (Anna), Carl Schmidt (Susie), Evelyn Banet (Raymond "Junie"); and 15 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 25, 2013 from 12 PM to 8 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, IN 47150). His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church (1752 Scheller Lane, New Albany) with entombment to follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.
