Raymond George Koopman, 91, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023. He grew up on the family farm in Starlight, where he worked alongside his parents and brothers. Raymond graduated from New Albany High School in 1950 and served for eight years in the Army Reserve.
He was instrumental in the creation of two patents and retired after a successful career as a machinist for General Electric in Louisville. Raymond enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards and, in his younger years, had been an outdoorsman. He was a longtime member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church.
He was born on March 5, 1932, in Starlight, Indiana, to Henry and Agnes (Smith) Koopman. In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his brothers, Lawrence, Bernard, and Edward Koopman.
Raymond is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley (Kobe) Koopman; children, Michelle Johnson (Larry), Anton "Tony" Koopman, M.D. (Lisa), Mary Jennings (James Ph.D.), Glenn Koopman (Theresa), and Bruce Koopman (Lilianna); brothers, Charles and Norbert Koopman; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and on Monday after 9:00 a.m. His funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church (5719 St. Mary's Road, Floyds Knobs) with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Raymond's memory may be made to St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church - Senior Citizens Mass and Meeting or the Funeral Comfort Meals.
