Phillip LeRoy Overton; Born, lived, and died in New Albany, IN. received Christ through baptism at age 6 uniting with the Holy Trinity Catholic Church where he served as the first black altar boy.
Phillip was preceded in death by his parents LeRoy and Bonnie Davis Overton, sisters, Charlotte Ann Watkins and Thelma Dixon, and brother Nicolas Maurice Overton.
He attended Holy Trinity Catholic School, graduated from New Albany High School, and earned an Associate Degree in Business Administration from Sullivan College of Business.
He worked faithfully and took on leadership positions at Pillsbury and the U.S. Census Bureau. Over the years he prepared taxes for H&R Block, friends, and family and was employed briefly at Caesar's Casino where he was a Slot Supervisor.
Phillip had a double retirement as a Master Sergeant from the US. Army Reserve 100th Division with 22 years of service and 32 years as a Postal Superintendent from the US Postal Service.
Phillip was full of life, laughter, and love. Wearing a suit and tie most of the time his hobbies consisted of playing card tricks, telling jokes, collecting and tinkering with gadgets, jig-saw puzzles, hunting, fishing, camping, dancing, swimming, playing tennis, shooting pool, bowling, playing cards, and traveling with social groups and on golf trips.
He was a member of the Thomas English Elks Lodge, the American Legion, 40/8 Club, the VFW, and the Kentuckiana Golf Club.
Survivors include his two daughters Toni Lyn and Timi Denise Overton, son Anthony Holmes Staten, sister Alma O. Bailey (James), his former wife Connie Overton, nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends.
