OTTO J. SCHULZ JR, cherished and beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 17, 2022. He was 95 years old.
A lifelong Louisvillian, O.J. was the first of three children born into the Schulz family grocery store business at 860 Vine Street. He often joked that his parents put proceeds from the day's sales into his crib so he could "count it with his toes." O.J. and his younger brother Gordon would later become co-owners of the store, partnering for decades in its ongoing success.
After attending grade school at St. Therese Parish and graduating from St. Xavier High School, O.J. enlisted with the U.S. Army and served as a sergeant stationed in Washington state and California. Not long after his return home, he became engaged to the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Holder. They would marry in 1951 and raise three children.
O.J. was a great Dad, and he often said about Betty, "If God had made anybody any better, He would have kept her for himself!" O.J. modeled for all his children and grandchildren the qualities which were his foundation for a life well-lived: faith, honesty, integrity, and love and loyalty in relationships. He shared his wonderful sense of humor with everyone he met.
Throughout his lifetime, O.J. thoroughly enjoyed competitive athletics, playing nearly every sport, including football and basketball in high school, along with baseball, softball, and tennis in the years that followed. After his retirement, he and Betty traveled with family and friends, including many stops on the PGA tour during the 1990s.
O.J. was predeceased by his parents, Otto J. Schulz Sr. and Anna Burger Schulz, his sister Ann Schulz Miller, and brother Gordon A. Schulz.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Holder Schulz, daughter Valerie Schulz Oates, sons Barry Schulz (Judy) and Ted Schulz (Diane); grandchildren Sarah Oates, Meredith Schulz English, Victoria Oates Borchers, Ashley Arnold Scroggy, Justin Arnold, Sam Schulz, Shelby Schulz, and Sophie Schulz Connette; and nine great-grandchildren.
A private service is planned for the family, followed by an interment at Calvary Cemetery.
