Odell J. Banet, 90, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana passed away on Wednesday morning, July 28, 2010. Odell was a lifelong resident of Floyds Knobs and member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church. He was decorated with the Air Medal (4 Oak Leaf Cluster), the EAME Ribbon (4 Battle Stars), the Crouix de Guerre avec Palme, and the Prisoner of War Medal for his service in U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. Odell was a retired vice president of the former Floyd County Bank. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Cardinal Ritter #1221, VFW Hobart Beach Post #1693 and served on the Age and Aging Board in Floyd County. He was active for 27 years in the St. Vincent DePaul soup kitchen in Louisville. Odell was very active in his church and community, and his family was his source of pride and joy.
Odell was born on December 17, 1919 in Floyds Knobs to the late Joseph and Eva (Zimmerman) Banet. He is preceded in death by his sister, Amelia Leist; brothers, Anthony, Alfred, Irvin, Bernard and James Banet.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Berniece (Schmidt) Banet; daughters, Theresa Getrost and her husband, Gary of Greenville, Indiana, Joan Endris and her husband Joe; sons, Michael Banet and his wife, Rita of Floyds Knobs, Rev. Stephen Banet of Indianapolis, Indiana, Paul Banet and his wife, Rebecka, Ralph Banet and his wife Denise, all of Floyds Knobs; sister, Marietta Gesenhues; brothers, T.J. Banet, and Arthur Banet; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-children.
The visitation will be from 12 Noon to 7 PM Sunday, August 1, 2010 with a Rosary Prayer Service at 6:30 PM on Sunday at Newcomer Funeral Home – Southern Indiana (formerly Generations Funeral Home) at 3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, IN 47150. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Monday, August 2, 2010 at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Meinrad Archabbey.
