It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Nelda Sue Barnard, who left this world on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the age of 80. A beloved resident of Louisville, Kentucky, Nelda brought light and love into the lives of those who knew her.
Born on March 28, 1944, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Nelda was the cherished daughter of the late Nelson and Anna (Price) Lloyd. She rejoins her brother, Vanous Lloyd, in eternal peace. Nelda's spirit lives on through her devoted daughter, Shelley Terry, her son, Michael (Jennifer) Barnard, and her treasured granddaughters, Paige Terry and Paxton Barnard.
An accomplished educator, Nelda proudly graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1966. Her passion for education was evident throughout her many years of service in the Jefferson County School System. It was here, at Pleasure Ridge Park High School, then Seneca High School, and finally Western High School, where she influenced countless young minds. Her love for teaching also inspired her contributions to the University of Louisville Writing Project, showcasing her dedication to both education and the arts.
Beyond her devotion to teaching, Nelda expressed her creativity through a floral shop she owned, crafting exquisite silk floral arrangements for weddings and local events. Her flair for artistry won her blue ribbons at the Kentucky State Fair for her remarkable carrot cake, quilting, and jazz jackets. Yet, amid her many achievements, it was her family that brought her the greatest joy.
Nelda had a knack for creating memorable moments, from cooking and baking for those she loved to sharing evenings watching UK games together. Each moment was an opportunity for laughter and togetherness, demonstrating the love she held for her family and friends.
A visitation will be held from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 23, 2025 and 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel (10304 Dixie Hwy). A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM on Friday, with burial at Bethany Memorial Cemetery.
In honor of Nelda's memory, the family requests contributions be made to the Dementia Society of America.
We invite all who knew Nelda to share in treasured memories and leave heartfelt messages for her family in the guestbook below. She will be greatly missed but forever remembered for the warmth she brought into our lives.
