Nancy Ann McClure

d. December 19, 2024

Nancy Ann (Hilgert) McClure, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and educator, departed this world on December 19, 2024, in Apopka, Florida. Originally from Sellersburg, Indiana, she was born on November 14 in Leavenworth, Indiana. Nancy’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of knowledge, love, and an unwavering Christian faith.

In the realm of academia, Nancy’s career in education began while teaching at Borden and Leavenworth High Schools. Her legacy began to take shape when she became the first faculty member hired at Ivy Tech State College (Sellersburg, Indiana) in August 1971. With her remarkable dedication, she ascended to the position of Program Chair, a role she held with distinction until her retirement in May 2003. She was awarded the Glenn Sample Award in 1982, which is given annually to one outstanding teacher throughout the entire Ivy Tech college network. Her students knew her not only as a mentor but as an inspiration, whose passion for teaching and learning left an indelible mark on their lives. Nancy’s commitment to education was rooted deeply in her own pursuit of knowledge, culminating in her attainment of a Bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Indianapolis and a Master’s degree in education from the University of Indiana. In 2020, Ivy Tech Community College (Sellersburg Campus) honored Nancy by naming an award after her. The McClure Award is given annually to a faculty or staff member for excellence in teaching.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Nancy was a member of Northside Christian Church.

As a young woman, she found joy in playing the piano for her church congregation of Corydon Baptist Church. Nancy was also a collector at heart; she had a particular fondness for Longaberger baskets, each piece representing a memory or story to cherish.

Nancy’s family was her pride and joy, and she leaves behind her beloved sons, Greg (Leigh-Anne) McClure and Clint (Sung) McClure. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Logan, Brooklyn (Ian), Connor, and Isabelle, and her great-grandchildren, Graham and Sylas. She also leaves behind several cherished nieces and nephews. Nancy shared lifelong friendships with Frankie and Brenda, who were her steadfast companions throughout the years. Nancy’s faithful dog, Tinker, was a loyal presence by her side, offering comfort and companionship.

Nancy is now reunited with her cherished husband of 57 years, Weldon Mitchell McClure, whose memory she carried with her always. She also joins her dear parents, Jesse Hilgert and Lula (Key) Hilgert, as well as her brother, Jesse Hilgert, Jr., and sister, Yvonne Pittman, whose lives shaped her into the remarkable woman she became.

Nancy’s visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, and Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, Indiana), with funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place at El Bethel Cemetery in Milltown, Indiana.
