Michael Huntley Smith, Sr., 77, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023. Mike was a proud veteran of the United States Army and a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church in New Albany.
He was born on August 28, 1945, in Hawthorne, Nevada, to Lloyd Smith and Emma (McCollum) Smith. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Smith.
Mike was very proud of his military career as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CWO-4) and a Green Beret/Special Forces in the 389th Military Intelligence unit at Bowman Field. He worked at Naval Ordnance Station in Louisville, Kentucky, for 27 years and enjoyed traveling around the country to different battleships to inspect the technical aspects of the guns. He retired from there during his fight with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, which had a low chance of survival. By the grace of God, Mike's family was blessed to have another 27 years with him.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing, golfing, IU basketball, traveling, and going to Derby Dinner Playhouse. He was a lector and usher at his church and served as a volunteer and president of the Georgetown Optimist Club.
Mike is survived by his wife, Ralene Chavers; children, Michael Huntley (Laura) Smith, Jr., Emily (Rick) Wilson, and Andi Ramser; brother, Tom (Nancy) Smith; sister, Lynn (Richard) Mowery; and grandchildren, Ben, Maddie, Huntley, Landon, and Lindsay (Aaron). Mike and Ralene also remained good friends with his former wife, Mary Ellen, and her husband, Tony Cestaro.
Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany).
