Michael Francis Hottois, 76, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022, surrounded by his family. He received his undergraduate degree from The State University of New York at Brockport and a Master of Fine Arts from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Michael retired from the University of Louisville after an over-40-year career teaching Scenic and Lighting Design, where he was a full professor and chair of the Theater Department.
He was incredibly proud of the design work he created for the Louisville Ballet and Merry-Go-Round Playhouse and was a member of United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829. Michael was an avid cyclist and member of the Southern Indiana Wheelman, riding more than 40,000 miles in the last ten years. He was the first Boys Soccer Coach at Providence High School, enjoyed classic cinema, and sailing, and was a huge fan of UofL Women's Basketball and the New York Yankees, as well as Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra.
Michael was born on January 21, 1946, in Cheektowaga, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Helen (Pontius) Hottois; brother, Donald Hottois; sister-in-law, Jean Hottois; daughter-in-law, Regina Hottois; and nephew, Roy Hottois.
Michael is survived by his wife, Georgette (Kleier) Hottois; sons, Ryan Hottois, Sean Hottois (Melissa), and Miguel Hottois; grandchildren, Sophia, Gavin, and Clark Hottois; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Kathy and Bill Coates and Linda and Michael Coates; nephews, Jeremy, Christopher, John Michael, and Jacob Coates; niece, Michelle Howe; and his beloved dog, Riley.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and on Thursday after 9:00 a.m. His funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with cremation to follow according to Michael's wish.
