Michael "Cowboy" DeSpain

May 19, 1961 — January 1, 2025

Michael "Cowboy" DeSpain, a beloved soul who graced Louisville, Kentucky, with his warmth, passed away on January 1, 2025, at the age of 63.

Born on May 19, 1961, Michael was the cherished son of the late Thomas and Juanita (Irvin) DeSpain. He is now reunited with them and his siblings Judy Martinez, Terry DeSpain, Tommy DeSpain, James DeSpain, Larry DeSpain, and infant brother Roger DeSpain, who have gone before him.

Michael leaves behind a legacy of love through his devoted wife of 32 years, Freda DeSpain. Together, they created a beautiful family, which includes their children Karen (John) Markham, Monika (Steve) Barnett, Jason Ware, and Adam (Erica) Caskey, who will carry his memory in their hearts. He was a proud grandfather to Todd, Nikki, and Robby, and a delighted great-grandfather to little Erin. Michael also shared a special bond with his surviving siblings, Charles DeSpain, Wanda Dempley, and Debbie (Phil) Allgood, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will deeply miss his presence.

Known for his many collections, Michael was a passionate fan of UK  and the Raiders. He truly embodied the spirit of a cowboy, embracing the simple joys in life. A self-proclaimed "jack of all trades," he dedicated himself to being a devoted family man. His greatest delight was sharing cherished moments with loved ones, often wandering to flea markets throughout Kentucky or hosting lively cookouts. One of his happiest traditions was spending his birthday at the movies with his grandson, where laughter and joy filled the air.

To honor Michael’s vibrant life, his family invites all to gather on Thursday, January 30th, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Newcomer Southwest Chapel (10304 Dixie Hwy) for a celebration of his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the American Red Cross, allowing Michael's spirit of giving to continue.
