Melvin "Mel" Theodore Volz, 89 years young, return to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 13, 2012. Mel was born March 10, 1923 to George Washington and Katherine Wode Volz.
Mel was an all-star football player for Manuel High School, and a Golden Gloves Boxing Champ. For these accomplishments, he was awarded college scholarships. However, those opportunities were placed on hold when he joined his three brothers in the United States Navy during WWII. Mel served 3 years, 6 months and 21 days. Upon returning home, he met and married Mildred "Millie" Wright in 1947. After 53 years of marriage, Millie passed on in October of 2000.
By trade, Mel was a Sheet Metal Worker, member of Local #110, and became Vice-President of Stuart Mechanical in Louisville, KY. Mel was the original owner of Melco Industries, Inc. He was a faithful Christian and member of Southeast Christian Church. He had a passion for golf and bowling, and for a time was a member of Woodhaven Country Club, American Turners, as well as The American Legion and VFW.
Mel is survived by his only son, Melvin Thomas Volz and his wife Deborah; three granddaughters, Erin Woodham (Alan), Gina Earle (Tim), and Jessica Lucas (Jeremy), as well as bonus grandchildren, Scott Carter (Polly) and Kimberly Kays (Doug). Additionally Mel is proud to have seven great-grandchildren, Olivia, Alex, Grace, Carter, Eliza, Julianne and Sydney.
A celebration of Mel's Life will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2012 at Southeast Christian Church, 920 Blankenbaker Road, Louisville, KY., with visitation there from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
