Mary Catherine West

Mary Catherine West, born on October 2, 1958, gracefully departed from this world on February 27, 2025. A cherished soul, Mary will be remembered for her sweetness and caring personality that endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Much beloved by family and friends alike, she possessed an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel like family.

For over two decades, Mary served diligently as a bookkeeper for Jefferson County Public Schools, dedicating her time and talents to a vocation that reflected her conscientious nature. Her retirement in 2019 marked the conclusion of an era, but her spirit continued to shine brightly in all her endeavors.

Mary found immense joy in creating special moments with her family, nurturing bonds that would last a lifetime. As a devoted mother and grandmother, these profound relationships were among her proudest accomplishments, each memory lovingly etched in the hearts of those she cherished.

In addition to her familial devotion, Mary was an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Church, where she engaged with her community through faith and fellowship. Her love for traveling added to her rich tapestry of experiences, each journey undertaken a testament to her adventurous spirit and desire to explore the beauty of the world alongside her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy West and her parents, Joe and Ruth Fleig.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories are her children, Cortney (Dale) Shewmaker, Christopher West , Jennifer (Justin) Crawford and Sean West; grandchildren, Thomas Shewmaker, Jackson Crawford, Henry Shewmaker and Westlyn Crawford; siblings, Rebecca Boyd, Benida Crask and Joe Fleig and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at the visitation held at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville, on March 11, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be celebrated at the same location on March 12, 2025, beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a graveside service at Bethany Cemetery at 11:00 AM, where we shall lay her to rest.

Mary Catherine West leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and community that will endure through the lives she touched and the memories she created. Her spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those she loved and who loved her in return.
