Mary V. (Schickel) Kirchgessner, 81, of Starlight, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday morning, October 4, 2016, at her home. She was a caregiver to her family in every sense of the word. Mary was an excellent cook and loved canning food and baking pies. She absolutely adored her grandchildren, enjoyed playing cards, and was a fan of basketball. Mary was also a long-time member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Mary was born on October 29, 1934, in Lanesville, Indiana, to the late Herman and Clara (Spath) Schickel. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Edward Kirchgessner; children, Patricia Ann and Michael Kirchgessner; and siblings, Catherine Schickel, Theresa Hobbins, and Paul Schickel.
She is survived by her daughters, Betty Vick, Theresa Williams (Richard), Rita Beam (Jim), and Rosie Torres (Tony); sons, Steve Kirchgessner (Ramona), Bill Kirchgessner (Michelle), Tim Kirchgessner (Debbie), Jerry Kirchgessner (Michelle), and David Kirchgessner (Kelly); daughter-in-law, Joy Kirchgessner; brothers, Peter Schickel (Joann) and Herman "Junie" Schickel (Joyce); 26 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; loving caregiver, Lexie Bitely; and her canine companion, Buddy.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and on Saturday after 9:00 a.m. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (8310 St. John's Road, Starlight) with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
