Mary Elizabeth (Anderson) Underwood, 64, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on January 3, 2017, at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital in New Albany. Mary was born the third child on December 19, 1952, in Bloomington, Indiana, to the late Arthur and Evelyn (Jeffries) Anderson. She was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended John Adams High School. She eventually met and married William Underwood, and to that union, four children were born.
Mary spent most of her adulthood working various jobs from customer care to labor positions. She took lots of pride in working and taking care of her family. She became ill with a tumor behind her eye in 2014 that began to cause memory loss. She ended up retiring in 2015 although she always wanted to return to work eventually.
She had many hobbies. Mary was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time outdoors on the porch reading a book or working word puzzles. She had a deep love for her grandchildren and loved to spend time with them. She enjoyed taking them on different outings, whether it be to the zoo, aquarium, a park, a walk in the woods or by the riverfront, or out to the town fair. She had a childlike innocence and was an all-round good soul. Mary was loved by many and will be missed dearly by all.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Dorian Anderson; stepsister, Dorothy May Edmonds; brother, Jimmy Anderson; and grandson, Zacharias Barajas, as well as grandparents, uncles, and aunts.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, William Anderson and Nathan Underwood; daughter, Karla Barajas; sister, Carrie Gay; brother-in-law, Michael Gay; five grandchildren, Emilio Martinez, Alexandria Rodriguez, Tatyana Underwood, Jabilo Underwood, and Jailen Underwood; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Her Memorial visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2017, with her Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, Indiana 47150).
