Mary-Lou "Lou" Gosnell Steever joined her heavenly congregation for services on Sunday March 5th, 2023. She was 97 (and 3/4, if you asked her) but to anyone whom she met, her age remained a mystery.
She was born on the second of June, 1925, to Leta Irene (née Zehner) and Kenneth William Gosnell in Lawrence county Illinois, she was the first of 7 children for the couple. A graduate of Lawrence county High School, she held several secretarial positions in her lifetime, the longest being 25 years as the executive secretary to the VP of manufacturing for Crucible Magnetics. All that notwithstanding, the title of which she was most proud was that of preacher's wife - a 49 year tenure.
Lou's earliest and fondest memories were of her mother's tireless efforts to make sure her children were in church. She continued that tradition with her own family, friends and more. If you knew Lou, you knew of her faith and devotion to God. It was this devotion, and her closing prayer at a church meeting that led a young preacher named Walter Wright Steever to make her his bride. Side note: If you at home are wondering how a stunningly gorgeous, leggy blonde ended up falling for a humble (but cute) preacher boy from Pennsylvania, all I can say is, trust in the power of prayer! Lou enjoyed singing in her church, crocheting while she could, and being an amateur ornithologist from her swing in the back yard.
She loved UK basketball and being at church. She remained a vital and active member of her church family at Mt. Washington First Christian, participating in Ladies' Circle regularly and helping at every function. Lou was preceded in death by her parents Kenneth and Leta, her brothers Billie Harold Gosnell, Alan Gosnell, and Richard Gosnell (Pat), and her husband Walter Wright Steever.
She is survived by her siblings Georgia Pope, K Gosnell, Suzie Derber (Bob), half-sibling Kathy Gosnell-Perrott, children Anella Tingle (Wendell), Douglas Steever (Diane), Victoria Steever, Shirley Howard (Mike), and Frances Steever, 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grand children, and 5 great-great-grand children.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions East Chapel (235 Juneau Drive Louisville, KY 40243).
Her Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at Lyndon Christian Church ( 8125 La Grange Rd, Louisville, KY 40222) with burial to follow at Louisville Memorial Gardens East beside her loving husband of almost 50 years.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations for expenses be made to the family in the name of Frances Steever, Co-Executor.
