Mary L. (Bachman) Schmidt, 88, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana passed away on August 20, 2011. She was a member of St. Mary's Navilleton Catholic Church for over 65 years. For many of those years, people who attended the annual church picnic enjoyed her homemade dumplings; she was the expert. Mary was active in the St. Anne's Altar Society at Navilleton for years. She was a devoted wife and mother who leaves a legacy of a good work ethic, unconditional love for family and friends, and an unending devotion to her Catholic faith.
Mary was born on January 12, 1923 in Lanesville, Indiana to the late Herman and Celesta M. (Messing) Bachman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond B. Schmidt; son, Ray Schmidt; siblings, Melba "Bobbie" Schueler and Kathleen Kahlan; and granddaughter, Julie Greer.
She is survived by her children, Gerald Schmidt (Patricia), James Schmidt (Linda), John Schmidt (Nina), Janice Schmidt, Sharon Gossman (Steve), Linda Miller, Lisa Schmidt, and Diana Williams; brother, Herman "Junie" Bachman, Jr. (Dori); 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 and 2 to 8 PM on Wednesday at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). A Rosary Service will take place at 7 PM on Wednesday. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Thursday, August 25, at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church (3033 Martin Road, Floyds Knobs) with burial to follow at St. Mary's Navilleton Catholic Cemetery.
