Mary Ellen Funk (Nonnie) Irwin
We let go of our mother's hand and gave her to God's outstretched arms on April 23, 2012. Mary was born on March 28, 1915 in Corydon, Indiana to Elsie Radmacher Funk and Harry Summers Funk. She graduated from Louisville Girls High School and was an exceptional athlete in tennis, basketball, softball and continued to participate in her adult years. She also was a model for the Kauffman Strauss department store in downtown Louisville.
Her husband, Jack E. Irwin preceded her in death in 1995. They raised their family in Eastwood where they owned a Holstein dairy farm. They were very active in Republican politics serving as precinct captains for many years. In later retirement years they moved to Middletown and spent winters in Florida. They were members of Eastwood Christian Church and later members of Southeast Christian Church.
Mary was a beloved mother of five, devoted grandmother of 16, great grandmother of 37 and great, great grandmother of 2. She is survived by daughters, Jacquelin Irwin, Marilyn Dillon (Harry), Judy Kimmel (Carl), Janet Stomberger (Denny), a son, Jack Taylor Irwin (Dr. Jeri Irwin) and sister, Louise Funk Steinbock.
Her sister, Madge Funk Falkenberg, and brother, Harry Summers Funk (Buddy), preceded her in death.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at Oaklawn for the love, care and compassion they have shown "Nonnie" over the last two years of her life there. The family would also like to thank the wonderful volunteers and staff at Hosparus.
