Martin Raphael "Junnie, Hotrod, PeeWee" Schindler, of Clarksville, Indiana, passed away peacefully at Baptist Health Floyd with his family by his side on Sunday, July 31, 2022. Martin was born in Floyds Knobs, Indiana, the oldest of 11 children, to the late Martin H. Schindler and Irma Magdalene (Sprigler) Schindler. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Jane Wolz, Erma Mae Walter, and Leon Schindler.
Martin is survived by his family whom he loved dearly: his wife of 67 years, Alice Faye (Shields) Schindler; children, Martin Joseph (Debbie Wilson) Schindler, Tami S. (Tom) Kruer, and Scott D. (Tara Ekart) Schindler; grandchildren, Crystal (Tim) Dearing, Martin J. (Cecile Singer) Schindler, Jr., Zachary (Kayla) Kruer, and Kari Kruer; great-grandchildren, Ishamel Dearing, Alivia Dearing, Will Kruer, Miranda Schindler, and Cole Schindler.
He is also survived by his siblings Martha Fessel, Judy Ann Kruer, Regina Philpot, Dorothy (Jim) Thomas, and James (Barbara) Schindler of Floyds Knobs, Calvin (Vicki) Schindler of Georgetown, and Liz (Ed) Timperman of Sellersburg. Martin is also survived by his sister-in-law, Charlotte Shields; brother-in-law, George Wolz; and by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Martin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Greenland. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Clarksville, Indiana, where he served as a Boy Scout Leader for many years. He retired from Paramount Plywood in New Albany, Indiana, having worked there for 45 years. He was a life member of the New Albany, Indiana, Knights of Columbus and served on the Our Lady of Providence High School Monday Night Work Crew for numerous years. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 28 Bonnie Sloan. He loved fishing, camping, caring for his birds and squirrels, sitting on his patio, and cooking for his family and friends.
Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church (316 N. Sherwood Avenue, Clarksville) with burial and military honors to follow at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Cemetery in Floyds Knobs.
