Martin "Jay" Ruff, 81, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023. He was a United States Army veteran and the former owner of Jay's Garage and J&J Used Cars, both of which were located in New Albany. Jay was organized, meticulous, and capable of fixing anything. He enjoyed attending local car shows and was a vintage Chevrolet enthusiast and collector.
Jay helped build several local churches from the ground up and was instrumental in installing and designing their sound systems. He had a love for old time music and had traveled and recorded with his family's gospel group, The Sunnysiders. Jay also liked collecting toy trains and had an outgoing personality, never meeting a stranger.
He was born on August 26, 1941, in New Albany, Indiana, to Jacob, Jr., and Georgia (Martin) Ruff. Jay was also preceded in death by his sisters, Wanda "Sue" Pipkins and JoAnn Curtis.
Jay is survived by his loving wife, Joan (Sprigler) Ruff; children, Cyndi Mahler (Robert), Hank Ruff (Reena), Sarah Ruff, and Andy Ruff; grandchildren, Alan Ruff (Keri), Martin "Marty" Ruff, R.J. Mahler, Raymond Mahler, Josie Ruff, Allison Sorg, and Julianne Sorg; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 24, 2023, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane) and on Tuesday after 11:00 a.m. His funeral service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at the funeral home with burial and military honors to follow at Palmyra Cemetery.
