Mark Phillip Hartman

November 27, 1948 — June 17, 2023

Mark Phillip Hartman, 74, of Berkeley, California, passed away in his home on Saturday, June 17, 2023. He graduated from New Albany High School in 1966 and attended Culver Military Academy. Mark was incredibly intelligent and valued higher education. He earned a BA from the University of Louisville and East Anglia in England. While overseas, Mark studied at the University of Oxford in England and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He later received a PhD from the University of Cambridge in England and a JD from the University of California at Berkeley.

Mark taught philosophy and law at the University of Millersville in Pennsylvania. He practiced real estate law and worked for 26 years for the State Bar of California as a research attorney and prosecutor. He prosecuted lawyers for misconduct, protecting clients and the public. Mark was a proud member of the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California.

He had many interests that included classical music, opera and ballet. Mark enjoyed traveling the world, with London and Paris being his favorite destinations. He was known for his quick wit, kind gestures, and engaging conversations. Mark was always looking out for others, especially those who were less fortunate. There is no doubt that Mark left the world a better place by having been in it.

He was born on November 27, 1948, to John and Agatha (Scott) Hartman. In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his brothers, John "Scott" and Matthew Hartman.

Mark was proud of the role he played with his younger siblings and strived to be a good brother, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his sister, Janna Schaefer (Greg); sisters-in-law, Paula Hartman and Rong Liang; nieces and nephews, Jenny Hartman Wendel, Eric Hartman (Michelle), Emily Hartman, Carrie Hartman, Silas Schaefer (fiancée, Caitlynn Krygowski), and Joe Schaefer (Ovi); great-nieces and -nephews, Tate Wendel, Max Wendel, Rayna Schaefer, and Taevin Schaefer; treasured friends, Phil Horowitz and Jason Gorski; longtime friends, Joan Glassheim and Elizabeth Pearce; many other good friends; and his beloved cat, Theo.

Mark's family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care provided by Hospice and other nurturing caregivers.
