Marilyn A. (Riehl) Zimmerman, 70, of New Albany, Indiana passed away on August 31, 2011. Marilyn was a 1959 graduate of Southern High School in Louisville after which she received the honor and crown of Miss Okolona. She was a Kentucky All-Star cheerleader and coach. Marilyn earned the distinction of the New Albany Deanery St. John Boscoe Award for her work as a cheerleading coach at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School for 15 years where the award-winning teams learned the value of hard work and dedication. An advocate for young people, she was a member of the New Albany Deanery Athletic Committee. A long-time member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Marilyn was an active "Primetimer" and member of the Resurrection Choir and Bereavement Group. Marilyn was a true example of service in her faith, unconditional love for young people, and genuine friendship to many.
Marilyn was born on August 4, 1941 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Tilford F., Sr., and Joan (Laemmle) Riehl. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Leroy J. Zimmerman.
She is survived by her children, Matthew J. Zimmerman (Jennifer) and Lisa A. Zimmerman, all of New Albany; brothers, Tilford F. Riehl, Jr. (Vicki), Tony Riehl (Mary Jane), and Tim Riehl; sister, Ann R. Burrice (Nick); sister-in-law, Rosemary Walsburger (Bob); and grandchildren, Jacob, Victoria, and Leah Zimmerman.
Visitation will be from 12 to 8 PM on Monday, September 5, 2011 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). A Prayer Service will take place at 7 PM on Monday. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Tuesday, September 6, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church (1752 Scheller Lane, New Albany) with burial to follow at St. Mary's Navilleton Catholic Cemetery in Floyds Knobs, Indiana.
