Copley, Mariellen Jane, "Aunt M", 94, of Louisville, Ky, died peacefully on November 8 at Baptist Hospital East Palliative Care, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Davenport, Iowa. Her adult life was spent with her husband in Mountain View, CA where she retired from ATT/Pacific Bell and then moved to Port Charlotte, FL to be closer to her sister.
A devout Catholic all her life and a member of the St. Gabriel Parish, she co-ordinated the servers for all the Masses. Wherever Aunt M lived, she involved herself in community volunteerism.
Sitting at the command center/dining room table, Aunt M oversaw the care of her sister for eleven years. Aunt M loved feeding the birds and squirrels, tending to the garden, and clipping coupons to share with friends and family. All birthdays and celebrations were personally acknowledged by Aunt M. The first original recycler, she taught us to waste nothing. She lived life fully with kindness and compassion. If you never met Aunt M, you missed an opportunity to meet someone truly extraordinary. She overcame polio with grace and determination and now she is unencumbered, free to walk into Heaven.
Preceded in death by her husband Richard, sisters Catherine Reimers, Phyllis Shafer, one nephew David Reimers and one great-nephew Curtis Shafer. She is survived by six nieces, Kathy Hotz ( John) of Mequon, WI, Mary Cartwright (Charlie) of Louisville KY, Sharon Downing of St. Joseph, MI, Theresa Jantzi of Davenport IA, Pam Shafer of Johnstown, PA, and Mariellen Grothus (Steve) of Davenport, IA, and one nephew Steve Shafer (Linda) of Mesa, AZ, fourteen great- nieces and nephews (one deceased) and nine great -great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to graciously thank Mary & Charlie Cartwright whose constant care allowed Aunt M to live a long and happy life. A special friend Carol Muncy and her great-granddaughter baby Bella-Bella brought special moments of joy and happiness. We also thank all the caregivers who touched Aunt M's life.
The memorial service will be held in the Spring of 2013 in Davenport, Iowa.
In life, as in death, the family would like any expressions of sympathy directed to St. Anthony Soup Kitchen, 150 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco, CA 94102 where Mariellen and Richard volunteered.
