Marie Julia (Hess) Smith, 84, of Borden, Indiana passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Marie graduated from Lanesville High School and was the accounting manager of the Borden/Tri County Water District. She was a long-time member of St. Mary Navilleton Catholic Church and was formerly active in the St. Anne's Altar Society and quilting group of the church. A member of the Mount St. Francis Ladies' Guild, Marie was well known for visiting the sick and the homebound. A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, she treasured her family. A model of genuine hospitality to all, she will be missed.
Marie was born to the late Albert John, Sr., and Theresia Mary (Geswein) Hess. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Louis E. "Bud" Smith; sister, Lula Mae Kochert; brothers, Francis, Wilbur, Albert, Jr., and Melvin Hess.
She is survived by her children, Connie Schilmiller (Joe), Fr. Tom Smith, OFM Conv., Mary Jo Mayer (John), Sam Smith (Rhonda), Therese Martin (Bill), Margaret Hoffman (Kevin ), Nick Smith (Lesa), Eileen Schraffenberger (David), Doris Ooley (Mike), and Denis Smith (Lisa); sisters, Rosetta Smith, Irene Naville (Bob), and Marcella Naville (Herman, Jr.); sister-in-law, Frances "Pank" Hess; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren (with 5 on the way).
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 PM Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with a Prayer Service at 7 PM. From 10 to 10:45 AM on Thursday, there will be visitation at St. Mary Navilleton Catholic Church (7500 Navilleton Road, Floyds Knobs, IN 47119). Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM followed by burial in the church cemetery.
