Louis Leon Griffin, 79, of New Albany, Indiana, entered eternal life on Monday, October 23, 2023 at Hanover Nursing Center in Hanover, Indiana after a 15-year battle with Huntington's Disease. He was born on October 1, 1944, to Delbert and Helen Griffin and spent the earlier part of his life in the Madison and Canaan, Indiana area. He was the first rider in the annual Canaan Pony Express run from Canaan to Madison in 1967, making the trek in a record time which has yet to be surpassed. Later, he lived in Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky before returning to Indiana. For much of his career, Louis worked in the safety and construction safety field, including Marble Hill, the Kennedy Space Center, West Palm Beach County, Florida, and was safety director on other major projects including the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge in Franklin, Tennessee. He loved the outdoors, especially riding around the farm on his John Deere tractor and participating in parades with his antique John Deere.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Griffin; sister, Ruth Albert; son-in-law, Mike Curl; and his faithful basset hound, Buddy.
Louis is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Jeanette Freiberger Griffin; sons, Jeff (Lissa) Griffin and Greg (Sally) Griffin; daughter, Lisa Curl; step-sons, Todd (Kim) Adam and Scott (Holly) Adam; grandchildren, Haley, Whitney, and Jordan (Melanie) Griffin, Ian (Leigh) Hoopes, Sean, Aaron, Stephen, Matthew, Maggie and Michael Adam, Lindsay Curl; and great-grandchildren, Brielle, Charley Rose, Wyatt and Callan.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, October 30, 2023 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Cremation will follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Louis' memory may be made to the Huntington's Disease Society of America or charity of your choice.
