Liberty Belle (Clark) Bauer, 94, of Jeffersonville passed away on January 5, 2013. An artist, Liberty dedicated her life to the arts and community service. She was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Jeffersonville. She was affiliated with the Girl Scouts of America for 25 years as a scout and leader. She served the community through her volunteerism in the Clark County Arts and Crafts Association and the Ken Ellis Senior Center. She worked for the WPA in the 1940's bringing art to the youth in rural Appalachia and served her country during World War II as the only woman draftsman in an all-male environment at the Jeffersonville Quartermaster. As a youth, she received the Times Effort Award from the former Louisville Times newspaper for her academic achievement. In recognition of her years of volunteer work, Liberty was awarded the distinction of the Southern Indiana Woman of the Year in the mid-1990's.
Liberty was born on July 2, 1918 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Charles Albertus and Mamie (Wells) Clark. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur B. Bauer; siblings, Jim, Bill, Ed, Frank, Roy, Bert, and Catherine Clark and Alberta Ray; and daughter-in-law, Linda Lou Bauer.
She is survived by her son, Donald E. Bauer; daughter, Carol Ann Bauer (Howard Hamsa); grandchildren, Rudi and Muad'dib Hamsa; stepson, Robert Bauer; stepgrandchildren, Robert A., Steven, and Terri Bauer; great grandchildren, Gabriel, Gavin, Garrin, and Lucas Bauer; and many relatives and friends who will miss her greatly.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 PM on Thursday, January 10 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, IN 47150) and from 9 to 10 AM on Friday at the church. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Jeffersonville followed by burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Jeffersonville.
