Ellis, Leonard David, 92 passed away on Friday December 23rd at Golden Living Rehab Center, Browns Lane where he received wonderful care. He was a resident of Masonic Home.
Born on February 19, 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio, Ellis moved to Louisville with his family in 1955, where he became manager of a Woolworth Store. He later worked for the Kling Company as a sales manager, then in the 1970s moved to Ashland City, Tennessee where he managed a variety store.
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife Jane. He is survived by his sister Irene Krieger, four children: Tim Ellis (Suzanne), Pam King (Gene), Tom Ellis (Peggy), Todd Ellis (Kellie) and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Leonard, a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps 11th Bomb Group, flew missions during WWII as a bombardier aboard a B-24 Liberator. He loved being able to serve his country. Among several medals and ribbons, Ellis was award the Distinguished Flying Cross for meritorious service.
Ellis organized several WWII reunions, serving as President of his Veterans group during its 1990 reunion in Nashville. His name was added to the 11th Bomb Group Plaque in the WWII Museum at Pearl Harbor Hawaii, where he attended the 66th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremonies in December 2007. Among other highlights of his later years were his trips to the Museum of the United States Air Force, Dayton, Ohio where he enjoyed seeing a B-24 Liberator similar to the one he flew in during the war and the WWII Memorial, Washington D.C. in June 2010.
There will be a celebration of Leonard's life on December 27th at 1:00 PM in Newcomer Funeral Home, Middletown with burial in Highland Memory Gardens, Mt. Washington. Visitation will be after 11:00 AM.
